How to choose a sales recruitment agency in South Africa.
The best agency for your sales hire is the one that can show why a person fits your actual job. Start with the work they will do, then compare the evidence, process and terms.
This guide explains our approach as a specialist sales recruiter. Use the same questions when comparing any agency, including us.
01 · Role fit
A job title is only the starting point.
Two sales representatives can do very different work. Someone selling insurance to consumers in one call may need a different skill set from someone selling software to finance leaders over three months. Hiring on title alone misses that difference.
Before asking an agency for candidates, define who the person sells to, what a typical deal is worth, how long it takes to close, how leads arrive and which parts of the sale they own. At HireSales, we call this the job's fingerprint.
SDR and BDR recruitment
Look for evidence of building pipeline: who they targeted, the channels they used, how they qualified interest and how many meetings became useful opportunities. High call volumes alone do not tell you whether the pipeline was good.
Account executives and business development managers
Check what they personally owned from prospecting to close. Ask about deal size, sales cycle, buyer seniority and results against target. Separate deals they closed from deals where they only supported the team.
Account managers, field sales and sales leaders
For account managers, distinguish retention from expansion. For field sales, check territory, travel and self-sourced activity. For leaders, ask about team results, coaching and forecasting as well as their own past sales performance.
For South African roles, specify the location, work arrangement and territory. For remote roles serving the UK or US, make market exposure and working hours explicit. These are matching requirements to confirm, not assumptions to make from a CV.
02 · Evidence
Ask what sits behind the score.
A score should help you decide what to investigate. Ask how it was calculated and which claims were checked, reported by the candidate or still unresolved. Missing information should remain visible.
For example, “R4.2m in sales” needs context: the period, the target, recurring versus once-off revenue, and the candidate's personal contribution. Ask whether the figure came from an interview, a document or an external reference. Those are different levels of evidence.
At HireSales, profiles distinguish verified and candidate-stated claims. Verified means tested in the interview against the record; it does not mean every claim has been independently confirmed with a former employer. The profile also names the main risk to explore. See how this looks in sample profiles.
A video interview lets you hear how a candidate explains their work before scheduling a meeting. Use it alongside evidence and role fit, rather than treating a polished presentation as proof of sales results.
03 · Your comparison checklist
Ask every agency the same questions.
A useful comparison starts with a sample candidate pack and a written explanation of the service. These questions help you judge what you will receive.
Can you show a relevant sample shortlist?
Look for why each person fits the brief, the evidence supporting that recommendation and the uncertainties. A large database is less useful if the shortlist does not explain fit.
What do you assess before I meet someone?
Ask about interviews, scoring, employment history and reference checks. Get a clear distinction between completed checks and checks you or the recruiter still need to arrange.
How do you compare different sales backgrounds?
Ask how they distinguish inbound from outbound, consumer from enterprise, and account growth from new business. They should be able to explain why experience transfers to your role.
What does the delivery time actually mean?
Clarify when the clock starts and whether it promises a shortlist, interviews or a completed hire. Ask what happens when suitable candidates are unavailable.
Can I see placement outcomes?
Ask for relevant examples and the period they cover. A useful case study explains the hiring problem, the reason for the match and the outcome. Read our HireSales placement stories as one input to your comparison.
What are the fees and replacement conditions?
Request written terms covering the fee calculation, payment trigger, guarantee period, exclusions and the replacement process. Do not assume a replacement guarantee means a cash refund.
04 · Commercial terms
Compare the service behind the fee.
When comparing proposals, check whether the fee buys a placement, an ongoing search, access to a database or a subscription. Confirm what the quoted amount includes and whether it is based on basic salary or a wider annual package.
HireSales charges a success fee agreed in writing before the search starts. There is no retainer and no placement fee if we do not place someone. Our 3-month guarantee provides a replacement first, at no extra placement fee, subject to the agreed terms. See our employer service or ask us about your brief and terms.
05 · Your brief
Give the recruiter the work, not just the title.
- The buyer: who they sell to and who makes the decision.
- The sale: product, typical deal value and time to close.
- The pipeline: inbound leads, self-sourced prospecting or a mix.
- The responsibility: booking meetings, closing, managing accounts or leading a team.
- The expectations: target, available support and what a good first three months looks like.
- The practical fit: salary and commission, location, working hours, travel and start date.
For B2B or SaaS sales recruitment, add the buyer's seniority, the number of people involved in the decision and whether the person must run demos or negotiate contracts. If something is undecided, say so.
